MyArtsandCraftsHome

The online community for people whose homes are in the Arts & Crafts spirit.

I noticed in doing some research, that this subject had been somewhat overlooked??
Therefore, I was just curious if others, like my self, could post original photos of their Arts n Crafts home mailbox. Original to the home would be best.
Over the years, I am sure that many of those original mailboxes were replaced due to age, abuse, vandalism, breakage, or by some mis-guided concept that newer was better?  I am enclosing a replacement I found recently at a city wide garage sales. If anyone knows of it's background, etc..Please pip in. Thanks

I have had a few iron ones that looked just like that thru the store over the years, do not have any like this now but in copper that is special!

Thanks Craig,
I figured it was rather special for many reasons, among them being copper, the condition it's in..
Just curious, for the sake of conversation, what price range did the iron mail box bring?
I have had several surprised "wide eyed" reaction from people upon seeing this mail box..
Copper seems to have that sort of draw..:)
This mailbox isn't original and it is probably English in origin but it is copper and goes great with our Arts & Crafts bungalow.

Hi Stacy..
Of course, by "not original", you meant not original to your home. I doubt it's a "reproduction"~
What great depth, and colors the patina is.
Do you have any information at all ? Any markings? How did it find it way to your home?
If indeed it came from England, what stories it might hold..:)
Just curious,
what happened to the original "mailbox" that was on the house?
Thanks for sharing, your home is lovely~!

Hi, Vern
You are correct. I did mean that the mailbox is not original to our house. When we moved in two years ago the mailbox was a 1970s style bright brass that someone had tried to spray paint black. We looked for a long time to find something functional and unique before we finally settled on this one which was actually an E-bay purchase. The lady we bought it from said she had purchased it for her home and never used it and that it came from an antique dealer that specialized in English pieces. I looked for markings on the box but didn't find any. I love old mailboxes. It is one of the things in our neighborhood I have been meaning to photograph. They are all very unique and wouldn't it be great if they could all tell their story?
Thank you!

Greetings Stacy,
Now that the the thrills of summer outdoor activities are over, I've come back to re-reading some of these notes. You mention taking photos of the mailbox in the neighborhood and by chance, I did that very thing, mentally. I walk every day in the town I live in, finding myself checking out the mailboxes on all of th houses. Just by chance, to see if any of the older ones were recycled. I must say, with the exception of only a handful, it does seem that at one time, the postal service must have made a strong impression regarding the replacement of the previous mail boxes. A huge majority seem to have been from a certain period of time..I 'm thinking the late 60's or 70'..The designs all seem to be "cut" from a similar mold. Which is a shame.
With that in mind, I did take my copper mailbox to the post office to check on it's acceptances. I was told, there would be no problem with it.. I have not installed it as of yet.
Recently, I discovered in St. Joseph, a town south of me, numerous neighborhoods of A&C style homes. I will plan to spend some time walking each, taking photos of the style, looking for mailboxes which appear to be original to the period.
