Any Ideas for Period-Appropriate Handrail for a Small Staircase?

"Nice house (the porch especially) : is it an original or a modern reproduction? Also, why the monotone color scheme? Visit historichousecolors.com and you'll see what a great paint job can do for curb appeal."

Lessons in so-called "Arts & Crafts" furniture buying

I'm wondering if anyone else out there is also frustrated by the reproductions of Arts&Crafts/Bungalow style furniture that purport to be made "entirely of quartersawn oak" but turn out to be cheap imports. In my case, I purchased (for over $1,000) a bungalow-style dresser on ebay (it is actually a Tradeswins product, but it is sold by a guy with a lot of "bungalow" style stuff and a very impressive array of products). It superficially looked O.K. and was really heavy. Well, one day I had…See More

Right now the only thing Arts & Crafts about the two yard-long (approximately) handrails that hug the walls of the staircase leading to my basement is the hardware (painted over, but I'll strip them soon). Frankly, the current rails are little more than two narrow poles more fit to clobber intruders than anything else. What to do?

The 1900 Adirondack-influenced Arts & Crafts style home my son and I bought in 2007 is a charming, brown cedar one and 3/4 floors (the rest of the second floor consists of deep eaves and they are where the squirrels live). Definitely a house the witch in Hansel and Gretel would love. I need to fix the roof (bettter yet, replace it), replace the porch and add a period-appropriate fence.

As for the concrete, well, that was being frugal.  I built that myself.  In my area I do not have a lot of options for solid stone countertops.  The next ones I do I am going to polish a little less.

I really do not like the finish on this cabinet.  Someone convinced me to try a darker stain.  This was the second cabinet I built for this spot and I sure was not going for a third:)
