"Hi Paul, Thanks for your comments.  The Dutch paint is a Linseed based paint (Allbacks).  I wrote to the company asking questions about the procedures recommended as their website information is conflicting and a bit confusing.  I…"

"I'm not familiar with the Sarco Type M or the German paint.  I'm assuming the Dutch paint is an oil-based paint - if so please let me know where you found it.  I was in the Netherlands this past spring and talked to a few…"

"Hello Paul, Randall, and others...  EXTERIOR FINISH PAINTS???   Working on the old windows... 1924 house, double hung - I will also be painting and glazing the exterior.  I've found a few recommendation for Sarco Type M, and one…"

"Dear Randall, Thank you for your comments and suggestions.  The idea of removing paint on 50 windows with metal scrapers sounds pretty time consuming.  I understand your comment about the patina and the glues, as I have re-finished a few…"

"Please do not dip strip them.  The solution will destroy the patina and glue.  Do not use water base chemical stripper, only oil base.  Water base will discolor the patina.  If you do not want to use any chemicals or as little as…"

Wood Finishes

If anyone has any good experiences or questions regarding wood finishes to share, I'd love to get a discussion going.  There is nothing more elusive than the perfect wood finish.  I understand that Gustav Stickley spent the remainder of his humble days up in his daughter's attic experimenting with wood finishes.  I've experimented with ammonia fuming, nitric acid, lye, and making my own varnishes from madder root and exotic rosens.  Let me know what you have done and what works!

Tell us about yourself:
I own a consulting practice and am a victim of the DIY craze.
Tell us about your Arts & Crafts house experiences and dreams:
After spending the first 10 years of my family's life restoring a century home (which was used for the filming of "Riding the Bus with My Sister") we decided to build a period home which would harmonize our favorite architectural styles and personal backgrounds. This led us to design a house with a Tudor exterior that would be an effective wrapper for our arts&crafts interior blended with some flavoring from our Dutch heritage. Our family focus also influenced our decision to build a house that would stand for 500 years so it could be handed down through the generations (if we could have our way). This meant building a timber frame structure made of heavy Douglas Fir timbers. We started with a Gustav Stickley design which served as the basis for our design and spent the next 2 years adapting the design to meet our lifestyle and wild ambitions. It has been a labour of love and exhaustion over the past 10 years but we are almost finished including the 2 acres of landscaping. As compulsive DIYers, we have enjoyed the satisfaction of a job well done from the landscaping and stonework, to the stucco and half-timbering, to the leaded glass windows and wood window casements, to the interior trim work, flooring, tile work, cabinetry and trim. I'd love to share experiences and pictures and receive some feedback.

Nice place, it reminds me of a lot of houses in the town where I was born.
