Just saw this posting and have to thank you for the wonderful photos you took on your "pilgrimage"--apt term! They really showcase (at least in my mind) how the Bungalow style house, big or small, is a house that incorporates is own shade and shelter, primarily due to the overhanding roof. The source architecture of the small bangla thatched roof cottage of Bengal, still provides the basic idea. Just clear away some trees, create a space for a house, and the roofing structure of a bungalow provides built-in shade and cooling. It is both integral to the landscape and stands apart from it. Maybe that's why the Gamble house, despite its great size, seems to have arisen directly from the soil and the forest.
